Frequently Asked Questions

Why do time zones sometimes have 30 or 45-minute offsets?
Most time zones are offset by whole hours from UTC, but some use 30-minute increments (India UTC+5:30, Iran UTC+3:30) or 45-minute increments (Nepal UTC+5:45). These reflect political and geographic decisions to keep an entire country or region on a single clock.
What is UTC and why is it used as the base?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard that all time zones are offset from. It replaced GMT as the global standard in 1972 and is maintained by atomic clocks. Using UTC as a base ensures unambiguous time communication across regions.
How does Daylight Saving Time affect conversions?
DST shifts clocks forward by 1 hour in spring and back in autumn, but not all regions observe it. A meeting planned 6 months in advance may shift by 1 hour when DST changes occur on different dates in different countries. This tool accounts for current DST rules.
