Frequently Asked Questions

Which letters are counted as consonants?
All 26 English letters except the vowels A, E, I, O, U. That gives 21 consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. Y is classified as a consonant in this count (it can optionally be treated as a vowel in the vowels counter).
What is the consonant-to-vowel ratio in English?
English text has roughly 60–62% consonants and 38–40% vowels by letter count. Consonant clusters (str-, thr-, spl-) are characteristic of English and Germanic languages. Languages like Hawaiian and Polynesian have much higher vowel ratios.
Can this tool analyze text in other languages?
The tool counts letters A–Z (consonants) and A, E, I, O, U (vowels) based on English definitions. For other languages, the definition of consonant and vowel differs, and non-Latin scripts require different rules entirely.
